Preventing Dry Eyes This Fall

As the leaves prepare to change colors, dry eyes can ruin the chance to take in the beauty of autumn. But, with a solid eye care routine, you can ensure that dry eyes won’t keep you from enjoying all that fall has to offer. Here are a few tips on how you can treat dry eyes so you can participate in all of your fall activities.

Why Dry Eyes Happen In Fall

While many people struggle with seasonal allergies in the spring, allergens can wreak havoc in the fall. Environmental changes that come in autumn can be problematic for your eyes. For instance, the air is often drier in the fall, irritating your eyes and slowing down tear production.

Without lubrication from tears, your eyes are left scratchy, itchy, and dried out, making you miserable. The dry air from fall combined with allergens such as

  • Ragweed
  • Dust
  • Dust mites
  • Pollen
  • Pigweed
  • Goldenrod

Also, as the temperatures drop, you may turn on the heater in your home or office. The dry air from outside combined with the conditions inside can cause your eyes to dry out.

Over-The-Counter-Dry Eye Treatments

One way to combat dry eyes is by using antihistamine medications to treat symptoms. Although antihistamines don’t treat dry eyes at the source, they can help provide some relief from symptoms.

Also, using a humidifier can help combat the dry air that comes with having the heat on as temperatures dip. Indoor heat can compromise the moisture in your eyes, but a humidifier helps keep the air around you moisturized and keep your eyes lubricated.

Other Dry Eye Treatments

Over-the-counter allergy medications are a good start in combating dry eyes, but other things can help. Avoiding irritants as much as possible, using artificial tears, and intentional blinking can help manage day-to-day symptoms.

But, when conservative methods aren’t enough to treat dry eyes, your doctor may consider other options. Your doctor may implement surgical treatments to solve the problem based on your needs.
